Kids' Activities: What to do on Rainy Weekends
September 1st 2008 10:21
Kids love weekends. Not only because mom and dad are not working and would be at home all day, but also because they could play all day to their heart’s content. They can run around outside under the sun. Play at the park. Do sports.
However, not all weekends are as sunny and fine as we hope them to be. There would always be rainy weekends.
Nevertheless, don’t let this dampen the moment and prepare activities for your kids so they can still enjoy the weekends no matter what the weather is.
Baking
Bake their favourite cookie or cupcake or cake. Let them watch you bake and you can also ask them to help out decorating the cupcake, rolling out and cutting the cookies or icing the cake. Not only would they have something nice for afternoon snacks but they would enjoy eating it because they had a hand in making them.
Painting
Involve your kids in a small painting activity. You can use different types of medium like crayons, water or oil-based paints. You can make them flower stamps and ask them to create a masterpiece on a piece of paper. If you don’t have the material to make your own flower stamps, you can just use their hands and feet to make a work of art. When they are done, you can frame Little Picasso’s painting and hung it on their room.
Crafts
If you have little daughters, jewellery making would be a good idea. However if you do not have the beads and gems to make the jewellery, try your hand on different paper crafts like scrapbooking, making paper boats (which you can take afloat a basin-full of rain water) or origami.
Watch movies
Sit back, relax and enjoy. Make them some popcorn and organize a movie marathon of their favourite cartoon shows and movies. Watch and laugh with them as they indulge themselves in hours and hours of movie time. Just make sure to get a couple of minutes rest in between movies to relax your kids’ eyes and avoid getting them strained.
Camping
Camping? On a rainy day? Yes, why not! Take the kids’ tent and put them up on their bedroom or the family room (wherever indoor where there is heaps of space), put their pillows and sleeping bags inside, and prepare some “camping foods” for them. To get that “camping” ambiance, turn off all the lights and any electrical and electronic devices. Live by the light of a torch or flashlight and tell some camping stories.
