Making an Elmo Cookie

July 19th 2008 05:32
One of the kid’s giveaways that I prepared for the kids on my son’s first birthday are Sesame Street cookies. For this example, we will be creating an Elmo cookie.

WHAT YOU NEED:

Your favourite ginger bread recipe (or even a pre-made ginger bread mix)
Plastic icing
Food coloring paste (or water based food coloring, although paste is recommended) – red, orange, green (or blue)
Sesame street character cutout (just the head)
Sharp tip knife
Sugar paste (used as a gluing agent to stick the plastic icing to the surface; instructions below)

HOW TO DO THE COOKIE:

1. Prepare your gingerbread cookie as directed.
2. Roll out the dough on a flat surface.
3. One after the other put your character cutouts on top of the dough. Follow through the shape with the knife until you carve out the shape.
4. Peel out the cut dough and put on a paper lined tray.
5. When all the dough has been consumed, bake it according to instructions.
6. While the cookies are baking, prepare your icing. Roll it out and knead until pliable.
7. Start coloring your icing as to what is required for your character (instructions below).
8. When the cookie is done, let it cool and decorate.

HOW TO DECORATE ELMO COOKIE

1. Roll out a red icing using a rolling pin.
2. Put the cut-out shape on top and cut it out the same you did with the dough.
3. Get a small amount of plain white icing and roll it out into a ball. Make 2.
4. Flatten the two white balls.
5. Get a very small amount of green (or blue) icing, make a ball and then flatten. Make 2.
6. Get a small amount of orange icing, roll it into a ball and flatten. This will be Elmo’s nose.
7. Flatten out a small piece of green (or blue) icing and cut out a shape of a smiling mouth.
8. Now all the face parts are ready, assemble them on top of your cookie. Brush some sugar paste on the icing surface to stick them on the cookie.

HOW TO COLOR THE ICING

1. To color, get desired amount of plastic icing.
2. Dip a toothpick on the food color and slide it over the icing.
3. Knead the plastic icing until the color evens out on the whole thing.

HOW TO MAKE THE SUGAR PASTE:

1. Boil 1 cup of water.
2. Add in 1 to 2 tbsp of sugar.
3. Allow the sugar to melt and take it off from the stove.

YOUR KID’S PARTICIPATION:

• Rolling out the dough.
• Peeling the cut out dough and placing them on the baking tray.
• Kneading the plastic icing.
• Decorating the cookie.

Alternatively, you can also use M &M’s for the eye balls and cut off licorice straps for the mouth. Use the sugar paste to glue them onto the icing. Hope your kids enjoy making the cookie! Happy baking and happy eating!

Kids in the Kitchen - Fairy Bread

September 5th 2006 09:30
Soft, fluffy white bread smeared with margarine and topped with a kaleidoscope of 100’s and 1000’s – Fairy Bread is a common adornment on any kids’ party table. It has been around for generations and apparently originated from England where they would sprinkle sugar over their buttered bread.

A birthday party just doesn’t seem complete without a piled high plateful of fairy bread yet these days, there seems to be more parents opting for the ‘take-out’ birthday party. So, why not indulge yourself and the children now? Fairy bread is so quick and easy to make (not to mention cheap) and is extremely popular amongst children of all ages. You don’t need to wait till a party to whip up some fairy bread though, head to the kitchen and with your kids’ help, indulge in some buttery, crunchy, sweet bread
