How to Make Squishy Squashy Play Dough

September 11th 2006 12:45
It’s raining outside, the kids are on holidays and complaining that they’ve got nothing to do.

‘Mum, I’m bored’. Little Johnny states, his bottom lip jutting out just so.

‘Well, go draw a picture,’ an exasperated mum says whilst trying to clean up Baby Jane’s Picasso of mashed potato and peas.

‘But I don’t want to, I wanna do something fun!’.

‘You can’t be that bored then, can you?’ mum replies, silently counting down the number of sleeps till school resumes.

It’s a common household occurrence and one that can send both the kids and mum insane. So here’s a cheap, quick and easy way to keep the kids entertained – make some squish squashy play dough.

Meet Mr Snowman, I mean, Mr Bug, no no, it's Mr Multicoloured Thingy Wingy

Here’s how:

Ingredients

2 cups plain flour
2 cups water
1 cup salt
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 tablespoon oil

Method

1) Mix together all of the above ingredients ensuring that they are blended well.

2) Add a few drops of food colouring.

3) Place the mixture into a microwaveable container and microwave on a high setting for 2 minutes.

4) Remove the mixture and stir, then return to the microwave for another minute

5) Repeat the previous step.

6) Allow the dough to cool as it will be very hot.

7) Once cooled, knead well and it’s ready for use. Keep it stored in airtight container.

Make an assortment of colours and have your kids’ help you make it. This will give them (and you) at least an hour of guaranteed fun time. When was the last time you built a play dough snowman?

Here's another tip for brightening it up - provided you can find the chunkier stuff and not the really fine stuff.

Simply add some glitter to it!

A simple tip, but I never thought of it myself until I saw my daughter's pre-school doing it.

Nothing I see but frowns,
Rainy days with children always get me down...

The last week has been a conest of wills between #1 Son and me. No park, no out of the house. I left him alone with a potato stamp and paint for five minutes while I fed the newbie and... I'm not even going to tell you.

Great post!
