Accessing Cheaper Child Care For Students
August 24th 2006 10:22
If you are a single parent and are currently studying or planning on studying in the near future, you may be able to access child care services for 10 cents per hour.
It’s no secret that the rising cost of child care has made it extremely difficult for parents to return to work or study, let alone those families operating on a single income. Even with the child care benefit rebate, a parent on a reduced rate is still likely to pay any where between $20 and $30 per day for care.
Under the Jobs, Education and Training Scheme (JET), administered by Centrelink, parents meeting certain criteria are eligible to apply for further reductions in the cost of child care. Parents currently receiving JET subsidies pay only 10c per hour, which is equivalent to approximately $1.00 per day in a long day care centre.
It’s amazing the number of students who will walk into a child care centre full of hope at attaining a position for their child, only to walk away disappointed because they simply cannot afford the fees. JET is a fantastic way for those parents (if they meet the guidelines) to achieve their dreams and remove themselves from the ‘welfare wagon’.
With the number of clients Centrelink have, it’s understandable that there are some recipients of government payments who ‘slip through the cracks’ and are not fully aware of their entitlements. If you know a single parent who is currently studying or planning on studying and they can’t afford the child care fees, point them in this direction or to their nearest Centrelink office.
Finally - cheaper child care for struggling students, without compromising on the quality of care.

Children who attend child care centres are able to access a wider range of resources then those readily available in the average household.
