Save Your Kids from Having a Sedentary Lifestyle
July 23rd 2008 05:18
With computer and video games famous among kids of any age, our children are starting to have a very sedentary life in addition to an unhealthy diet. Problems of obesity rooted from this condition. No matter which way you look at it, those pounds and pounds of burgers and French fries and sodas plus the hours and hours our children spend in front of the TV or computer playing games when added up really equates to them living a very unhealthy life at a very young age.
However, it is not yet too late to mend their ways and get them to be active once again.
GET THEM WALKING
Every so often that the weather is nice, get them to do some walking with you. A walk to the park, around the block or even just in your backyard would be enough to start them with. 30 minutes to an hour of walking during weekend mornings is great. 15 to 20 minutes in the afternoon before you start preparing dinner on weekdays could also help. Not only do you get yourself and your kids some exercise, but you also spend some precious time with them – something that you rarely find time to do with your busy schedule.
HIKE OR BIKE
If your kids find walking less challenging (and less fun) why not try biking... Get them (and also yourself, if you know how to bike) to do a couple of laps at least a few minutes every day. If their school is only a few blocks away and it’s safe for them to go to school with their bike, get them to do just that. Not only could you help solving environmental problems with smoke emission from cars but you also save of spending money on bus fare or petrol. But of course, don’t forget to remind them of safety and responsibility. Be sure that they are all geared up when biking and that they know where the bike paths are.
SPORTS IS COOL
Involving your kids in sports is good fun for them and it allows them to have something to look forward to at the end of the week. It is wise, though, to get them to sports classes or sessions for the weekend so that it will not interfere with their studies. In addition to keeping them active, sports also teach discipline, not only with your kids’ physical aspect but also mentally, emotionally and socially. Enrol them in badminton, basketball, football, rugby, tennis, swimming... whatever sports they are interested in. And yes, the key is they should be interested in the sports they would be involved in, otherwise it would just not work and you would just be throwing away your money to nothing.
CHORES CAN HELP
Get your kids to help out around the house. The little walking to and from certain parts of the house everyday can help stretch out those limbs and muscles. For example, after dinner instead of letting your kids sit in front of the TV from after dinner until they go to sleep, get them to help out a bit in clearing the table. The simple walk from the dining room to the kitchen is better than sitting on a couch for the first 15 minutes.

You're right there Jo, these tips really applies for more than just kids.
And I'm glad that besides me and my husband, somebody else agrees that even kids should be given their own share of chores, Mrs M.
Thanks for the comment, ladies.
