Asperger's Child - But You Said I Could!

Jack loves to draw. Or scribble, depending on your interpretation of his artistic abilities.

At nearly six (two more sleeps!) he prefers to play with a ream of paper and an assortment of textas as opposed to the latest Spiderman toy.

Sometimes I wish he would play with action figurines, I always wanted to be Batman. Or Batman’s girlfriend.

We usually go through about a ream of A4 paper in our house each week. That’s 500 sheets of paper each week or 71 pieces per day.

Crayola markers

No wonder Officeworks is still in business.

Yes, we use recycled paper and many times I’ll take cast offs from work home for Jack to work his magic with.

Am I painting the image that Jack is fascinated with drawing and writing?

Good.

Last week, as a house warming present to ourselves, MM and myself purchased a beautiful 8 seater dining room table stained in a cherry finish. It takes pride of place in the sunroom/dining room of our new abode.

We also have a small country style four seater round table that sits in the kitchen and is used as a breakfast table.

We explained to Jack that the new table was for eating only, no playing with cars on it and definitely no drawing on it. However, we informed him he was still allowed to draw on the kitchen table.

He took us literally. I should have said you can draw on paper at the kitchen table.

We woke up the next morning to an array of colours slashed all over the kitchen table. There were words, pictures of me and trees and other illegible scratchings.

The whole table reminded me of that scene in Stigmata where the walls are covered in furious writing.

Naturally, I took a few photos had a chuckle then tried to clean it all up.

I also made a mental note to be a little more specific in the future.

This reminds me of the time my eldest son was in trouble for something he'd apparently done repeatedly. I believe he was around 7 or 8 years old. I remember asking him, "How many times have you done this?"

He said, "I don't know."

I said, "Give me a ball park figure."

He said, "Third base?"

As parents, we really do need to slow down our process of speaking and ask ourselves how the children may interperet what's been said!

Hope the furniture survived the ordeal!

Love it.

We have given up on table clothes because NOS knows where the paint lives and sometimes I'm so busy with the baby all I can say is "Thank you", when he pulls the art supplies out.

haha. i would have drawn on the table too. you should of put a gloss cover over it . so it would stay there forever. or untill he is old enough to sand it down and create another masterpiece on it.

I met Little Angry Doll at the Orble Christmas party, and she was wondering where you've been ...

Hi Adrian

I was kidnapped and held for ransom. Nobody wanted to pay the $5 to get me back and eventually I was released because they felt sorry for me.

Ha.

Life's been busy, very busy. Am contemplating whether or not to continue with the site.

Nice pic at the party too.......LAD is a gem.
