I was watching a TV show (from a Filipino cable channel) a couple of weeks back and remember seeing this mom who is just dead worried about his son who is around 2 year old.
The mother says that his son isn’t as sociable as they hope he will be. Whenever kids come by their house, he would not play nor talk with them. He would stay far off where the other kids are and play by him self. He says very few words and would often times seem as if he is in his own little world. When his parents would call for his name, he would very rarely look their way as if he hasn’t heard anything. He plays with only one toy and most generally plays with make-shift toys. He loves stacking objects or neatly placing pieces of toys or any objects in a single line. When he falls into a fit of tantrum, he would bang his head on the floor or wall and would be screaming and crying
Concerned as she is, the mom brought her kid to a child psychologist to get assessed. And although the psychologist is ultimately positive about her son’s condition, she confirmed that her son does have some kind of autistic condition.
The one thing that got embedded on my mind is the fact that the psychologist stated that one thing that a normal 2 year old should have the ability of doing is have at least 50 words that he knows to say at this age. That got both me and my husband thinking, “How many words do our two year old say?”
I should say my 2 year old is a bit of a late bloomer. His vocabulary hasn’t really started flourishing until just before he turns two. His motor skills also came in late.
After watching the TV show, my husband asked me to write down the words that my son could say. I wasn’t able to do it then. I just remembered it now while thinking of something to share my blog readers.
He could say:
1. mama
2. dada
3. banana (though he says it as nana, so I don’t know if that counts)
4. drink
5. juice
6. eyes
7. nose
8. ears
9. mouth
10. head
11. hand
12. feet
13. egg
14. rice
15. Coke (does proper nouns count?)
16. no
17. pen
18. drawing
19. chocolate (oh yes, he can say that alright…)
20. hat
21. captain (learned it from The Wiggles)
22. car
23. train (he says it as choo choo train)
24. duck
25. soap
26. soup
27. milk
28. book
29. cheese
30. bye
31. that
32. light
33. slide (though he misses the “S” when he says it)
34. shoes
35. socks
36. cookie
37. tea
38. bee
39. hi
40. hello
41. guitar (though he just say “tar”)
42. fish
43. monkey (he says it something like minkey)
44. phone
45. hug
46. kiss
47. press
48. wake
49. up
50. down
51. stairs
52. cat
53. dog
54. clock
55. ball
56. sit
And if the counting numbers does count, he could say:
1. one
2. two
3. three
4. four
5. five
6. six
7. seven
8. eight
9. nine
And I could proudly say that he starts saying the sentence “Wake up, Jeff” clearly.
Hmmm…that’s more than fifty already. Well, I guess we’re on the safe side now. He might be just coping slowly, but he’s getting there.
How about you? Does your two year old say at least 50 words?
